Christmas is such a special time of the year. For us, one filled with family traditions and lots of eating. Carlos and I have always enjoyed Christmas, then... the kids came along and Christmas took on a whole new meaning.
They always wish for snow, which is a little hard to come by, living in South Florida. Their Christmas tree decorating skills are not quite keen just yet, since they insist on placing all of the ornaments in the same 1 square foot spot... and Christmas morning feels like a tornado has ripped through the house, tearing open all the presents mommy stayed up wrapping on Christmas eve into the wee hours of the morning.
It amazes us to see how excited they get at the thought of a strange bearded man breaking into our home. We've managed to convince them that the surveillance cameras at the stores are really Santa's keeping an eye on how they behave while out and about shopping. We've even (and by we, I mean me) had to make some cell phone calls to Santa to inform him of bad behavior... which usually is followed by crying and screaming and loud NOOOOOOOs.
Someday all of our deceit will be exposed and we'll be unmasked for our holiday lies. If they're smart they will shut their trap and continue to pretend, because any smart adult knows that the moment you realize Santa is really your parent, the good gifts seize to appear under the tree and the magic of Christmas changes into mere illusion.
Until that sad day comes, we will continue to shop in the wee hours of the night while everyone is asleep... and point at the cameras in the stores and make black hearted threats.
From our family to yours... Merry Christmas! May your lights shine bright, may your jingle be jolly and may your stockings be stuffed with all the goodies you deserve.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE HERNANDEZ FAMILY!!!
